The second city of Greece and the capital of Greek Macedonia, seventy-six kilometres north of the hotel.
Thessaloniki is the obvious day out from Olympiaki Akti. It is a straight run north on the motorway, and it is a working city rather than a resort, which is exactly what makes it worth the drive.
The waterfront
The White Tower stands at the end of the old seafront and is the thing everybody photographs. The promenade running from it is long, flat and made for walking, and the stretch towards the concert hall is where the city goes in the evening.
Markets and food
Thessaloniki has a reputation for eating well even by Greek standards. The covered markets in the centre are the place to start, and the streets around them are full of small places that fill up at lunchtime with people who work nearby.
Making a day of it
Leave after breakfast and you have the whole day there and are back in time for dinner on the terrace. Ask at reception before you go and we will tell you where to park, which is the only genuinely annoying part of the trip.
